On Sunday 14 November 2021 Thornton Parish Council held the Remembrance Sunday service at the War Memorial plaque at the Stocks & Sundial at the corner of Water Street and Green Lane opposite the Village Green. The service was well supported and members of the community gathered together to participate in the public act of remembrance where the Two Minutes’ silence was observed and there wreaths were laid. Also displayed at the service were three silhouettes of servicemen from the First World War which had been especially made by Cllr Kevin Rathbone.

Representatives from the churches: All Saints with St Frideswyde’s, King’s Church and St William of York, as well as the Women’s Institute, were all in attendance and prayers and readings were offered.

4th Crosby & District Scouts were on parade at the service and contributed to the service with a reading.

James O’Keeffe, Deputy Chair of Thornton Parish Council: “Thornton Parish Council were proud to welcome the return of the Service of Remembrance here in Thornton this year. Due to Covid-19 restrictions last year’s Remembrance Sunday looked very different to previous years with Sefton’s Remembrance service going online. This year, being the centenary of the formation of the Royal British Legion, is so poignant because of everyone’s experiences over the last year and a half. We are grateful to all of the members of the public who attended the service as well as the fine contributions provided to the occasion by the local churches and 4th Crosby & District Scouts. It was really special for the community to gather together once more in memory of all those who died in war in the defence of our country and community.”

This year’s Remembrance Sunday Service is only the third of its kind to have been held in Thornton but Thornton Parish Council are committed to continuing to hold a Remembrance Service every year from now on.
